Five Timeless Financial Strategies That Have Helped Clients Succeed for 25 Years

By Abbey Henderson, CFP®, RLP®, CAP®, AEP®

Over the past 25 years, the financial world has changed considerably. Markets have risen and fallen, tax laws have evolved, technology has reshaped investing, and families have navigated longer retirements, changing careers, and new definitions of success. Through it all, certain financial planning principles have remained foundational.

These strategies don’t depend on predicting the next market move or following the latest trend. They’re grounded in understanding what matters, making thoughtful decisions, and using financial resources to support a meaningful life.

As Abaris Financial Group celebrates its 25th anniversary, we’re reflecting on five timeless principles that have helped clients pursue confidence, fulfillment, and Authentic Wealth.

1. Financial Planning Starts with Purpose

A meaningful financial plan begins before investments, retirement projections, or tax strategies enter the conversation. It starts with a more important question: What do you want your wealth to make possible?

For some, that may mean retiring early enough to travel with family. For others, it may mean supporting a cause, building a business, caring for aging parents, or creating opportunities for the next generation.

There’s no single definition of financial success, which is why planning should begin with your values, vision, and priorities.

When your purpose is clear, financial decisions can be made with context. Saving connects to something meaningful. Investment risks are evaluated through the lens of a real goal. Estate planning becomes an expression of your values. Even everyday spending choices can feel more intentional.

Wealth is most powerful when it supports the life you want to live.

2. Focus on What You Can Control

Financial markets will always involve uncertainty. Economic conditions shift, interest rates change, legislation evolves, and unexpected events influence performance. While you can’t control those forces, you can control many of the decisions that shape your financial future.

You can decide how consistently you save, how thoughtfully you spend, and how much risk you take. You can diversify your investments, review your tax strategy, maintain appropriate insurance coverage, and avoid allowing short-term headlines to dictate long-term choices. These decisions may not feel exciting, but their cumulative impact can be significant.

One of the most enduring lessons from the past 25 years is that consistent action often serves investors better than reactive decision-making. A well-designed strategy provides a framework for navigating uncertainty without abandoning long-term goals whenever conditions become uncomfortable. That doesn’t mean ignoring change; it means responding thoughtfully, with decisions grounded in your plan rather than driven by fear or speculation.

3. Build a Plan That Evolves with Your Life

A financial plan reflects your goals, resources, and priorities at a particular point in time. Your life, however, will continue to change.

A new job may affect your income and benefits. Marriage can bring two financial histories together. The birth of a child may reshape your savings goals, estate plan, and insurance needs. A health event, inheritance, business sale, or retirement decision can create new opportunities and responsibilities.

Financial planning should be an ongoing process rather than a document created once and set aside.

Regular reviews help you assess what has changed, reconsider what matters most, and adjust your strategy accordingly. They can also help you prepare before a transition arrives.

Retirement planning, for example, involves more than determining whether you’ve accumulated enough assets. It may include deciding where you’ll live, how you’ll spend your time, which relationships you want to prioritize, and what will give your next chapter meaning.

Your plan should grow with you, providing direction while leaving room for new goals and possibilities.

4. Think Beyond Investments

Investment management is an important part of financial planning, but a portfolio alone can’t define a meaningful life.

Abaris approaches Authentic Wealth through the Five Levers: Finances, Mindset, Relationships, Health, and Time. Each lever influences the others.

Your finances may give you the ability to reduce your workload, but your mindset affects whether you feel comfortable making that change. Good health allows you to enjoy the experiences you’ve planned for. Meaningful relationships provide connection and support. How you use your time often reveals whether your daily life reflects your priorities.

Looking at wealth through this broader lens can lead to better questions:

  • Are you protecting your health while building your career?
  • Are you investing enough time in the people who matter most?
  • Do your beliefs about money support your goals or create hesitation?
  • Does your financial plan give you greater freedom over how you spend your days?

Financial assets can create choices, and those choices become meaningful when they support your overall well-being.

5. Relationships Matter More Than Transactions

Financial planning often involves deeply personal decisions. Clients share their aspirations, concerns, family dynamics, and questions about an uncertain future. They may seek guidance during major milestones and difficult transitions. That kind of work requires more than technical knowledge; it requires trust.

Trust develops through listening, education, honest conversations, and long-term collaboration. It grows when clients feel understood and know their questions will be met with patience and thoughtful guidance.

Over the past 25 years, client relationships have shaped Abaris Financial Group. We’ve had the privilege of helping individuals and families navigate career changes, prepare for retirement, build legacies, support loved ones, and make decisions aligned with their values.

In many cases, those relationships have extended across decades and generations. Continuity keeps financial guidance personal and connected to each client’s evolving story.

Timeless Principles for the Years Ahead

The next 25 years will bring new technologies, strategies, and challenges. Markets, tax laws, and the ways people live and work will continue to change. But the principles behind thoughtful planning will remain consistent.

Begin with purpose. Focus on what you can control. Allow your plan to evolve. Consider every dimension of your well-being. Build relationships grounded in trust.

As we celebrate 25 years, we’re grateful for the clients, families, colleagues, and community partners who have been part of the Abaris story. We remain committed to helping people live intentionally, use their resources meaningfully, and build wealth that reflects more than the value of their financial assets.

That’s the foundation of Authentic Wealth, and it will continue to guide our work for years to come.
