Spring Reset: Clearing Out What No Longer Serves Your Vision for the Future

By Abbey Henderson, CFP®, RLP®, CAP®, AEP®

Spring has long been linked to rebirth, renewal, and growth. It’s a time for clearing out the old to make way for the new. Often, we associate spring cleaning with throwing open the windows and getting rid of the clutter. But it doesn’t have to be limited to our homes; our lives can benefit from a similar approach.

Over time, we accumulate commitments, habits, patterns, and relationships that once made sense but may no longer fit who we are today. A spring reset is an opportunity to address those misalignments and reclaim valuable space.

The 5 Levers of Authentic Wealth provide an easy-to-use framework to kick off your own Spring reset. Below, we’ll walk through each one and share a simple reset.

Financial Well-Being: Eliminate Empty Expenses

Clutter accumulates in our financial lives, just as it does in our physical surroundings, building up over time and eroding financial health.

Digital life makes so much of what we do incredibly easy, almost to a fault. Unlike in decades past when you had to face accountability for purchases by paying cash or writing checks for physical bills, you can buy almost anything at the push of a button today. Small, seemingly harmless purchases add up and compound over time, especially recurring charges.

Simple reset: Review recurring expenses such as digital subscriptions and cancel any that are redundant, that you aren’t regularly using, or that aren’t adding something meaningful to your life. Look at larger purchases – clothes, trips, dinners, vehicles, household furnishings and gadgets. How many of those were necessary vs. a nice-to-have?

On their own, these financial decisions are typically innocuous. As a pattern, in the aggregate, they can do measurable harm to your financial well-being.

Empowered Mindset: Let Go of Old Narratives

All of us have baggage, the things we carry with us through the years: the beliefs we hold about ourselves, our past, what we think the present should be, and what we insist the future must be.

Baggage is emotional clutter. Old or outdated narratives prevent us from fully appreciating and enjoying the present, and hold us back from future growth. Baggage can also be a short-term challenge. Often, your life’s circumstances change faster than how you think about money, success, or relationships, creating periods of misalignment.

Simple reset: Set aside 20–30 minutes to reflect on where you are and where you want to be. What do you want more of? What has been holding you back? What feels unnecessary, heavy, or outdated?

The intent isn’t to solve all your problems, but to gain a fresh perspective.

Meaningful Relationships: Choose Connection Over Obligation

Family, work, pets, home, sleep–life’s day-to-day responsibilities occupy a significant amount of time and energy, leaving less of both for friendships than you may have had when you were younger. That means the relationships we maintain should be fulfilling.

Over time, relationships can become defined by habit rather than real connection. We say yes to invitations out of habit or a sense of obligation. We stay in draining relationships because of history. We fill our calendars with activities that keep us busy but don’t energize us. Doing so cuts into the already limited time available for the relationships that offer deeper and more meaningful connections.

Simple reset: Look ahead at your calendar. Identify commitments that feel like obligations. Going forward, be more intentional, choosing fewer but more meaningful interactions over a full calendar.

Vibrant Health: Reclaim Your Energy

Less light, colder temperatures, sickness, storms–winter can take a toll on your health. In the early weeks of Spring, it’s not uncommon to feel like you’re routinely operating at a lower energy level.

Health often becomes one of our lowest priorities. With so many obligations and people relying on us, we tend to treat rest, exercise, and recovery as optional. Even when we’re able to get into a routine, it’s often temporary or in spurts because work, travel, or changing schedules get in the way. But longer days and milder weather are the perfect opportunity to reclaim your health and recharge your energy.

Simple reset: Choose one small habit to reestablish. It can be as simple as taking a daily walk, committing to getting to sleep by 10 every night, or relaxing with your coffee outside in the morning air.

Keep it simple and achievable. The goal is to rebuild your momentum through small steps, not transform yourself overnight.

Time Abundance: Clear the Noise, Create Space

Time is the one thing most of us wish we had more of. There’s simply not enough of it, and the time we do have goes by too quickly. That truly makes it one of your most valuable resources. Some aspects of our lives are fixed and nonnegotiable, such as work and family commitments. But most of us are guilty of misusing the free time that is available.

We lose time by reactively responding to invitations or requests when saying no would be better, or by mindless scrolling that brings little joy. It’s cliche, but cliches exist for a reason: Make the most of your time.

Simple reset: Next time you find yourself doom scrolling or streaming something that’s not truly engaging you, ask yourself what else you could be doing. Reading a book? Taking a walk? Playing with your kids? Reflecting? Catching up with a friend or family member?

Gaining back time isn’t a matter of opening space that you can fill with other commitments. It’s about creating the space to do things you long to do but never have the time for.

Small Changes Can Put Some Spring in Your Step

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be dramatic. Often, subtle changes are more successful than sweeping overhauls. Meaningful transformations tend to come from small, intentional changes that you can continue to carry forward consistently.

The 5 Levers offer a lens for how to view and achieve authentic wealth that goes beyond financial success. You don’t need to address every lever tomorrow. Start with one then move to another. Allow yourself to gradually emerge into Spring renewed and rejuvenated, with greater alignment, a clearer sense of direction, and a life that feels more your own.
